Judy Sgro was elected to the House of Commons for the riding of York West in a by-election on November 15, 1999, and was re-elected in 2000, 2004, 2006 and 2008. She presently serves as the Critic for Seniors and Pensions.
During the last session of Parliament, Ms. Sgro was the Critic for Labour and has formerly served as Minister of Citizenship and Immigration.
In January 2003, she was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Works and Government Services. She was also Chair of the Prime Minister’s Caucus Task Force on Urban Issues and a member of the Standing Committee on Health.
She has served as a member on the standing committees on Justice and Human Rights, Human Resources Development, Public Accounts and the Sub-committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities. She chaired the GTA Sub-committee of the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization project and was a member of the 2008 Federal Olympic Bid.
In 1994, Ms. Sgro was elected to Metropolitan Toronto Council as a Regional Councillor.
She initiated Canada’s first “John school” to combat street prostitution – a model across Canada and the United States. She served on the North York City Council from 1987 to 1994 where she chaired the Mayor’s Task Force on Drugs as well as the Intergovernmental Affairs Committee.
In 1998, she served as Vice-Chair of the Toronto Police Services Board, working to preserve the integrity of the Toronto Police Service.
Involved in many community affairs, she was President of the Cancer Society. She also sits on the Board of Governors for Villa Colombo.
She is married and has three children.
